A wide variety of services are available in Kirkjubæjarklaustur, including a bank (with automated teller machine), swimming pool, grocery store, post office, auto repair shop, hair salon, health care centre, library, and coffee shop. We’re located only a short distance away from many of Iceland’s best known pearls of nature, such as Skaftafell National Park, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, Ingólfshöfði nature reserve and the volcano Laki. At the edge of our field stand the Landbrotshólar pseudocraters, formed some seven thousand years ago; Tröllshylur, where the Skaftá river once ran; and the breathtaking Fjarðárgljúfur canyon, found on the way to Laki. Nor should one forget the elven dwellings close to the farm, where keen-eyed folk have often caught sight of the Hidden People. Hotel Laki, Efri-Vík, stands on grass-grown lava, 5 to 8 thousand years old, 5 kilometres from the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Evidence indicates that Efri-Vík has been inhabited ever since the initial period of settlement in Iceland. Still visible today is Bjarnargarður, a wall adjacent to the farm experts believe to have been constructed some time between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, probably to keep grazing livestock out of farmers’ fields. In several places the remains of old farms may also be seen. Research in the area shows that a layer of ash from the Öræfajökull eruption in 1362 can be found 60 cm below the surface of the ground and an ash layer from the 1245 Katla eruption deeper still. In the shelter of the glaciers, the weather is mild and welcoming all year round – just like your hosts at Hotel Laki. |
